I'm looking into buying a new 2012 or 2013 from the dealer for use on trails and at my camp. However I have heard that the oil has to be changed every three hours and if I'm just trail riding is this necessary? If not what would be the new oil change interval? Do you think this bike would be reliable if I do simple maintenance for just trail riding and maybe a couple jumps? (Vavle adjustments, filter cleanings, oil change) please detailed answers ONLY! Short half sentence answers will be reffered to yahoo abuse. Any other tips or info would be greatly appreciated.

I think that's ridiculous! I would look in the owner's manual. (I wonder if mc owners manuals are available online! Certainly the dealer ought to be able to show you one.)

Riding on dirt means more dust getting sucked into the air intake. But that's what air filters and oil filters are for. Years ago, a lot of motorcycles had very primitive air filters, just a piece of mesh or 1/8" thick open-cell foam. And a lot of bikes had no oil filter at all! These days filtration is much better.

Years ago, you were supposed to change the oil in a car every 3000 miles, and the filter every other time. These days I know a lot of people who still do that. I know people who claim to change the oil on all their vehicles every 1000 miles! Can't be too careful!

But both auto manufacturers AND oil manufacturers now recommend oil/filter change intervals of 5000 miles. On dirt roads that interval might be shortened, but THREE HOURS? That's just outrageous!

Thats not true My brother races his and we change it every 8 hours just too be save also i would consider a different bike for trail riding because the New 250fs are very sensitive with fuel injection any tiny dirt will clog up injectors and the thing will not start Servive wise if you dont ride hard The Valves Dont need adjustments really unless your on the rev limiter alot but i would check them every 10 hours Filter i do that every ride oil depends if your talking about Gear or Motor (4 strokes have both) I change Gear oil every 5 rides motor every 3-5 depends if im racing or not

You'll get an owners manual when you buy it new. Go off of that. I buy service manuals when I buy bikes. I haven't bought any thing new in years. New dirt bikes only come with 6 month warranty. I just shop for low hour bikes and get them for half or less.

All this info is in your Owner's Manual. If you don't have one, I can look it up for you in one. I work for a Kawi dealer.
