There have been a few that tried here in the US, and failed. I would talk to them first to find out what went wrong and how to not make those mistakes. The most famous is Eric Buell, he has had at least 2 companies go under, the latest recently this year. He was also using innovative stuff which has caught on with at least Yamaha. Next is Micheal Cyzz(last name I am not sure of at the moment. He tried to build a new American Sportbike to take on Europe and Japan, it has not worked out as of yet, not sure if he is still trying.

You have to realize the big companies spend billions of dollars in racing, what they learn on the track is what they eventually put into the street bikes. If you don't have billions of dollars and have a team that races nearly constantly, you are left behind. Look at BMW for that fact.

I admire what you want to do, and would love for you to build the fastest bike and it be American Made, but the fact is it is a HUGE expenditure that takes decades of racing experience with a team and engineers to accomplish, and it is always evolving. What may be the stuff today, probably won't be tomorrow, and certainly won't be for next racing season against Honda etc.

Good Luck.

There are a few ways you can get started.

1. If you live in the U.S., Harley Davidson is located in Wisconsin. Get a job with them as a manufacturing engineer (assisting in design for manufacturing and assembly) or design engineer (designing mechanical components of motorcycles). This is the best option for learning the business and manufacturing side of having your own motorcycle business.

2. Go back to school and learn how to be a motorcycle technician/mechanic. This is the 2nd best option for learning how to actually build and test the motorcycles yourself. This will help you become an expert in welding and assembly, and maybe even painting/body work.

3. Lastly, when you have gained the knowledge needed to design and make your own bike and start your own company, you need to raise nearly 1 million dollars. Or outsource everything in the beginning, requiring about half the money.

Good Luck

You sure your not related to Eric Buell? That's a lot like his story. You have big dreams. Anything in this world is possible, you just have to want it bad enough. What are you willing to sacrifice for it? If you are really a mechanical engineer, you probably can do it. Your not going to surpass the big guys. Sorry, but you can make it better, faster, and more reliable. Don't invent the wheel, make it better.
