depends on what makes you like, personnaly i've got a kawasaki zzr600, but i like honda cbr600's too, also triumph daytona's so i suggest that you go and have a look at some big bikes so you can make your mind up regarding make and model

milage depends on the year, obviously the lower the better

road tax is less that 50 quid for 12 months

once you've decided on what make and model to go for, go and have a listen to some (listen to the engine, you're looking for a sweet sound)

also decide what type of bike you want, eg sports bike, streetfighter, cruiser, chopper etc

good luck and happy riding, but be careful out there

Honda Gold Wings and a rare few others (some of the big V-8 monsters like Boss Hoss) have reverse. Gold Wings use an electric reverse, while I think Boss Hoss uses a 2 speed froward, one reverse gear transmission. I am no expert on these bikes so somebody else may correct me if I am mistaken on any of this. I own a Yamaha Venture that is actually heavier than a Gold Wing and it does not have a reverse gear. After a beer or twelve, I sometimes wish it did ;-)

Almost all the manufacturers bikes are reliable.A good mileage depends on what you can afford the less miles on the bike the better it should be. Have a look round the dealers and see what catches your eye. They will be more than happy to let you take a test ride if they smell the possibility of a sale.

Beware of huge excesses for a test ride on the small print though, some start at £500!!

Depending on your budget and taste in bikes the world is your oyster! I've recently just taxed my Thunderace and Gpz900 that stung me £66 each for the year!

Happy Hunting.

i guess it depends.....

Everything is good with respect to each manufacturers but it all depends on what you think is good so i suggest make a list of what you think looks good (regardless of what anyone says) and test ride them. (600's, 900's, 1000's, 1800's etc..) just because they look good doesn't mean you yourself will be comfortable on it :)

Personally, I have tried so many that i will no longer buy anything lower than a 1000cc... (it just doesn't sound or feel right reving a 600...)

Don't be fooled by the sound of any bikes as any bike with a proper muffler regardless of power sound excellent! I was blown away with the sound of a 250cc with a properly tuned muffler setup.... Very Nice!

At the moment, I have 2 Honda Blackbirds, and a Kawasaki. A Hayabusa 08 coming soon.... :)

Tax in the UK... i can't help you there.

For millage, the lower is always better (in some respect) but do keep an eye for owners (sellers) who actually takes very good care of their bikes. There are riders who are passionate with their bikes and there are riders....

Kawasaki ZX-14 / Honda Blackbird / Suzuki Hayabusa / BMW K1200s with 15000 miles is pretty good in my opinion. Its basically young for these types of big bikes. Anything below 1000cc, well 15000 miles may seem a lot for me. A lot of riders do ride 600cc pretty hard to get the power satisfaction; on bigger bikes, well, its effortless :) (again personal opinion)

I have seen and ridden bikes that have more than 60000 miles on them (Honda & BMW's) and these bikes have been taken care of properly. (Serviced properly, small problems are changed not just mended, etc.. etc..).Very Smooth and a pleasurable ride! but then again always check service booklet.

I would recomend buying new (as i always would) only if it fits in your budget. otherwise the above is what i would be looking at including looking for scratches, dents, see if it has been dropped.... Was it fixed.. etc.. etc....

good Luck and happy riding.

Oh yeah, I personally don't worry about the mpg... if you will look into this, stick with the 600's.

HOndas are the most reliable and all around best bikes. Check out the 600 Hornet. How the bike was cared for is just as important as mileage. Look for a bike from someone who was really fussy about how they kept their bike.

Hi mate. first of all i will say tax for any thing over 600cc is now 66 pound for the year. do you want a sports or a cruiser ? all depends on your age as well not being rude. im 42 and used to ride a hornet 600cc but as i have family ive now sold that and got myself a vn900 classic a cruiser so its slowed me down a little bit but then i feel safer. so its a matter of choice. all i can say see if you can go to a few show rooms and take some out for a test ride and get the feel on how you want to be. speed is not every thing. good luck mate.

All bikes are good, except for the Chinese bikes. Some are way overpriced, you don't always get what you pay for unless you so value a name.

Tax varies in every country and every state.

I would think 40-45 mpg would be about average for a bigger bike.

Hi my first bike was a suzuki gs500, it was very good and reliable, but i grew out of it quite quick. I then bought a Suzuki Bandit 600. Which in hindsight i should have got first time around. It's built yo last, has plenty of power and is very basic to work on, therefore it's cheap to own and run. My friend bought one as his first bike 2 years ago and is still very happy with it. Good Luck.
