Let's put it this way: The XR is a much better trail bike than the TY is a trials bike. If you want a bike to ride, that would be an excellent swap. The XR is as reliable a dirt bike as you will ever find. But any vintage trials bike is pretty rare. You will find another XR long before you would come across another TY.

As with the other answers the TY is a much sort after trials bike, there are plenty of XR250's about. A good XR is an excellent trail bike. Remember all bikes wear eventually, this incudes Hondas (I have owned/riden many trail/enduro bke over the ladt 30 years. One of the best was a Honda but probally the worst 2 were also Honda).
The 250 is probably the best of the XR's to ride on the trail, lots of fun.
Look out for sticking front brake calipers on the XR along with worn head bearings.
Anther thing is worn head internals (valve guides/cams) often due to thrashed and poorly maintained bikes.
This causes poor starting, very difficult and frustrating, especially when the engine is hot!

The TY might not be a great trials bike, (was there ever a great Japanese trials bike?), but it is way more rare than any XR250. I'm with racefan, I would try to sell the TY if possible, but yes the XR250 is a rock solid, bullet proof trail bike and a freking blast to ride.

yamaha makes great bikes, but when it comes to reliability honda beats them all,in other words make the swap.
