Question:
Why is my motorcycle engine cranking, but not starting?

Hello there,

I've been in the process of replacing my head gasket on my 2006 HONDA CBR600RR. Today I re installed everything, and in the meantime I replaced my spark plugs as well. Everything is installed correctly to my knowledge (I triple checked everything with the service manual) and I went to start the engine and it is cranking just fine, but will not start. I've tried to pop start it with the clutch to no avail. The kill switch is connected, and there is a fuel smell emanating from the exhaust. My only guess could be that it is not getting a spark for some reason.

The original cause of the replacing of the head gasket was from white smoke pouring out of my exhaust.
Might it not start up because the cylinder head is warped or cracked?

On a side note, it has been sitting for about a month and a week

I unfortunately don't have means to get a compression gauge right now, however, I did do a spark test. I took out one of the spark plugs, hooked it into the ignition coil, grounded the spark plug to a bolt head and pressed the ignition. There was no spark arching on the spark plug. I took off the gas tank and checked to make sure all the connectors were connected to their proper inputs and everything seemed to be good. This would lead me to believe it may be bad ignition coils? I'm not so sure.

Any ideas??

Ask any questions, I'll be monitoring this for a while.

Thanks!!

Well there are 3 requirements for an engine to run Compression, Proper Mixture and Spark if ya have no spark as ya stated then it's bound not to run! I tend to doubt your coils went bad so the most likely cause is your re-assembling of the engine I'm not too up on the newer Hondas but the odds are there is something wrong in the ignition control, most likely right by the flywheel and stator there is probably a magnetic coil that triggers the spark check it and all the wires attached all the way back to the coil and you should find the problem!

PS by the way that white smoke you saw was not smoke it was water vapor from the head leaking water into the combustion chamber..... Oil smoke is Blue Gas smoke is Black and Steam is White

Did you remove the engine from the frame to replace the head gasket?

Double check that all connectors are plugged in.

Did you unplug the coils?

Sometimes they don't make a good connection plugging them back in.

Check for spark at all 4 spark plugs.

If they all don't spark, check the connectors coming off the engine.

If some spark and some don't, plug the non working coils into

the connectors that have spark.

If they still don't spark, replace it.

dead battery maybe before you cranked on it - but now for sure. so either charge it if you are lucky or replace it.

in the meantime parallel it up to a car.

ignition coils can be checked with a resistance meter - as can their input voltage (which if my theory is correct will tumble (8v) when you crank) - and not enough for a spark

new battery - charge it well before you use it

Check you are getting a spark!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
