I saw an ad with someone selling a 150cc bajaj chetak scooter with low miles (dont know exactly how many), probably about four years old, with some minor issues (headlight doesnt work, electric start doesnt work).

Is a Bajaj a decent, reliable and durable scooter? Is $1200 a decent price? Is fixing an electric start in the realm of do-it -yourself?

$1200 is the going rate for used Chetaks. Avoid the 2002 model if you can but they are still OK, the early voltage regulators were weak, (many were replaced by now though....) and they had a long 800 mile break in period back then that a lot of people ignored. but for the most part there is plenty of support for these, and quite a following too. Al Kovites who is the head of Bajaj USA (now ARGO USA) is Easily reached if your dealer cant solve any problems. He is a great guy too.

the electric start problem is a dead battery. The bajaj electrical (or any scooter) will not recharge the dead battery, but will maintain it and run the lights. Scooter electrical systems are not like a car, you get 35 watts for the headlight, 5 watts for the taillight and 5 watts for "maintaining" the battery. The battery itself just does the "temporary" electrical jobs like Starter, horn and signals.

Bajaj makes scooters for india which is a 3rd world country (almost) and they are used for everyday transport there.

They come with a spare tire, which is a great help as the Japanese scooters dont have them, nor are they easily changed.

This really isn't a good deal. You can buy new ones for just over that price(and nothing is wrong with them) Yes, fixing the electric start could be a do-it-yourself thing, but it could also be the hard part. It depends on the model. Oh, and i would never buy a bajaj. I did once, and it had all sorts of engine trouble within the first year. I would not buy one for $500, let alone $1200.

Bajaj Pulsar 200 NS is good option. The new Bajaj Pulsar 200 NS carries a pressed steel perimeter frame together with a clip-on type handle bar that offers better handling over a much longer lifetime. Bajaj Pulsar 200 NS is pure brilliance inside and out. While the unbeatable technology working at its heart does not fail to charm the techno-crazy youth, its 'Naked Sports' looks are enough to bowl any observer over.

Thats true Bajaj's bikes are not worth but pulsar 200ns is completely different. it's does not make any problems even after 2 years and incase of perfomance it beats 220 easily in a drag race surely the best of pulsar but duke is better than this bike ...but at a budget of 1 lakh this is de best go for it youll feel the power ...when I took the bike from show room I crossed over 100 kmph and still it gives 38-42 kmpl karizma is a good bike but incase of perfomance it can only compare to pulsar 180

Bajaj are OK. Its closest thing to a Vespa "P" series and I know someone who rides one. No complaints from them.

If it has that kind of problem and you know how to fix it . I would try to talk them down on the price. Maybe $200 or more.
