Question:
Can anyone else remember the first time they hit a ton on two wheels?

Mine was the week after I got on the road and still learning, I couldn't wait to tell anyone who'd listen, it seemed like a massive landmark at the time.

And yes I know its not big, its not clever, and its not funny but I don't care cos I like it.

You should join the army boys down in Aldershot on a Sunday when they all take out their Ducattis and Hondas etc up the M3 and burn up the road at over 160mph. Needs to be a Sunday so you can ride along the white line with your head down or you'll lose the road fairly quick. I asked a friend once why the hell he did 165mph on his bike, his answer, "It only goes up to 165"

I wasnt driving but....Ohh I can it was behind my cousin. The maniac hit 121 mph on a road I wouldnt do 60 on. I took the knee out of a good pair of levi jeans when he leant into a right angle bend to the left.It was a Boneville export model. Destined for the US but the order was cancelled. Go to google maps and look for Hanging Hill Lane. You can see the bend. Just past a road called the Tyburns. That bend owes me some denhim..That Must have been about 1980..Ok so I`m a golden oldie. I was what was called a greaser at the time. What might be called a biker now. And yes its not big or clever but man its a real adrenaline rush....

Yes I can. It was in the 60's and I was riding a Triumph 110 with Bonneville export bars on ( cow horn handle bars, for those of you who don't know ) I was travelling to St Helens from the Manchester end of the East Lancs road, as I approached Carr Mill railway bridge, where the national speed limit began, I turned my head round to see if there where any police about and my sun glasses blew off. We didn't have to wear crash hats then but, had the approaching traffic lights changed against me I might not be writing this letter with all my digits in tact.

At 62 I am still motorcycling, and doing the odd ton now and then, but at least we have better brakes and tyres these days.

I am also an advanced rider, which, although it doesn't mean I can speed it makes me more aware of any hazards I may be about to approach.

Yes, when I got a KLR 650 (rubbish bike) after years of riding motocross bikes - I was used to just giving it full throttle all the time because of short gearing on crossers - got on the 650 with longer gears and it felt sluggish, but then looked down and realised I was actually moving quite fast. Came over a little humpback bridge in Cambridgeshire doing a ton and went airborne big time. The faces in the cars coming the other way were amazing! Nowadays I've calmed down and ride a big old K100.

Yes, 1987 another employee at the service station had a GS1100-and was complaining about being smoked by a 900 Ninja. His GS had V&H or Yoshi header, pod filters, hotter cams and all that crap. He didn't know crap about his bike, but I insisted that he should lose a drag to a stock 900.

Well, one night after work, he shows up-like I am his big brother defending him from a bully-with the Ninja rider too. So ,being 19 and knowing everything-I race him... down a sidestreet.... yes! I am smoking this guy...and then looking down as the speedo was well over a ton. I got off the bike-walked a few blocks back to the station, got in my car and left. I'm an mx guy, never did that again.

The ton was on a GPZ 550 many years ago. I remember more - hitting the two ton last year on a deristricted Hayabussa - really thrilling and like straddling a torpedo because the air-stream felt as solid as water! The thing would get to 100mph from rest in 5 seconds (quicker than an R1), popping power rises (non-clutch induced wheelies) up to 3rd gear. The bike had to go because it was lulling me into a false sense of invincability ! Pleaze be careful !!!

I can remember very well regularly getting up to 75 on a long stretch of west Texas road but that was the speed limit. I used to get way past 100 when I was young and Stupid. That Old Indian Chief would burn up the road . These Days I don't need to get INK all over me. You are only allowed 6 points on your license.(INK= Ticket)

Just about every morning on my way to work. There is a streach of highway where no cops can sit, just a few miles before a toll box. That part of the trip is what I call "my morning coffee"...cause at 110 mph, it'll wake you up quick! Don't recall the first time, but was probibly on my ol' sporty some years back...I got me a softail now.

Yeah 1985 Nottingham on a Honda NS125 fitted with a 185cc big bore kit. Idiot the traffic cop called me but still didn't get a ticket i suppose not all cops are bad. My bikes a bit quicker now though 104mph first gear! 2004 Kawasaki zx10r true speed FANTASTIC and for all those bike haters out there i still haven't grown up.

Yes, Coming back from Matlock in Derbyshire on a z400 twin, it was going down a 1 in 7 hill with the wind behind me, head on the tank doing my smallest man in the world impression.

Its all too easy now.

Can't remember the first time i hit 100, but I remember with crystal clarity the first time I scuffed the side of my boot leaned over in a turn.

Tucked into a 35mph right-hander at about 55, nice banked corner you could see through, leaned it over a bit more and throttled on...scufffff. oh yea!!! Even did a fist pump in the air on the next straightaway. mmmmmgoooood.

Hell yeah it was only 3 years ago, on the A90. On a brand spanking new Varadero demonstrator. That thing is a beast by the way.

Went back and collected my girlfriend and did it again, 2 up.

Funny thing was though- I decided not to trade up to a Varadero because it was too ugly!

Yes its cool - in moderation of course. First time at a ton? Long time ago - when there was a lot less traffic on the road.

Take care now.

i bought a Honda Hornet 600 in June 2006. My first bike. I hit 100 MPH on a motorway the first time out... It felt quite windy at that speed and i was wearing jeans...

On the way back i hit 112 MPH and it was windy.. Its quite easy to scare yourself at that speed...

I love and can't wait for the summer. My bike is in storage at the moment as i'm a fair weather biker!!

I hit the ton on a old red Honda VT500e, in the Peak District.

It could cruise at 90mph no problem but to get to the ton, it was head on the tank and let it rip. Yeeeehaaagh.

yep, on the back of my husband's kawasaki something back in 1988 going up the Fahaheel Expressway in Kuwait early one Friday morning with the muezzins calling from the mosques and the milky blue of the gulf waters away to the left when road curved up over the ring roads and the city scattered like childrens' building blocks over the sunny sand........

yup, i had a honda city fly 125cc until i passed my test, then i got a suzuki Bandit 400. (grey import)

WHAT A BIKE! no faring, and it had variable valve timing so when you opened her up it was like a totally different bike!

just went out for a ride one sunday morning (early no traffic) on the A22 near eastbourne. less than 2 weeks after passing. was just cruising through the town in my full lether gear, looking mighty foxy, saw a few mates in town and went to pick up one of my mates to go for a ride.. he passed a few days before me. ( he had a Honda NSR)

so we went of and as soon as we got on the dual carraigeway we were following this old biddy. doing 35mph in a 70 limit area. so we looked at one another and went for it. neck and neck until i hit finally 109mph!!!! WWOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!

thats stretch of road is flat and straight for about 2 miles! what a beauty!

When i got off the bike finally at eastbourne pier... i was so buzzing that i needed about 10 cigarettes in a row before i could ride again! the engine was so hot i needed to leave it to calm down!

but i will never forget that. after 2 years of riding. i have had a couple of close shaves... but it must be said... VOLVO drivers seem to have it in for us bikers!

4 potential accidents... and ALL VOLVO DRIVERS!!!! i am a driver, and i think that every driver should learn to ride a bike of some description just to realise how inconciderate and bone idol, car drivers are....

anywyays thats enough of my rant! bye!

Oh yeah, never forgot it. 1967, on a 650 Matchless. That was youthful bravado, downright stupid really, considering the tyres, brakes etc of the time.

I was seventeen still at school, and was the pillion passenger on my boyfriends Triumph, he was a professional racer, it was in the days before crash helmets were compulsory. My parents would have had heart attacks had they known. You see, we were all stupid at one time.
