Never owned a sym but have owned a Kymco. On my Kymco I was able to change the clutch boss and increase my speed from 30mph to 42 mph. It cost me 30 dollars and 30 minutes. Of course that was in 2001. Even at that speed I was getting 90 mpg. They are both made in Taiwan and not China. Don't buy a Chinese scooter they are pieces of junk. Several websites rate Kymco and Sym as excellent scooters and some even say they are better than Italian made ones. Side note: Some states say that if a motor scooter goes faster than 30mph you have to have a drivers license, license plate, and insurance. Don't believe those scooter dealers they will tell you different. Check with local laws before you buy.
