Is there a motorcycle safety belt or some other safety device used to connect a young child to the driver?

My little girl cannot reach the footpegs (by 8-10 inches) and she is pestering me to take her for a ride ever since she got a helmet for her 5th birthday. I would love to, but safety comes first. I have asked a Michigan State Police Officer about laws govorning child passengers on motorcycles and he informed me that there is no age limit, and the only law he was familiar with was that for a passenger to ride on a motorcycle, the bike has to have 2 things - a rear seat and rear footpegs.

I take my kids out for little rides. We go slow around town.



And I am sure you are smart enough to dress her properly! Geez, people are freaking out! Don't they take there kids for bicycle rides? That can be just as dangerous with traffic around.



The law in Alberta is no passenger in front of you. (I think) And I think that would be unsafe for control of the bike.



I think it would not be safe to harness them to you. I have told all of mine (age 5 to 9) that if the bike is falling over, to get away from it so it doesn't land on top of them. I don't worry about them falling off though. They hook there fingers through my belt loops in the front of me.



It would be safer if her feet reached the pegs. But I think as long as she had somewhere to firmly place them, for stability.



Remember to tell her that if she rides it, she has to help clean it! (but they usually like this anyway!)

Don't know if this will be of much help but I have a seven year old girl, she has been riding with me since she was 5. I made pegs for her so she could reach and balance. We never went over 35 and stayed in town. She has a top of the line helmet and full leathers. Before this the only time she was allowed to even touch the bike was once in awhile I would put her on the tank and give he a ride around the block never going above 15 mph. This year she can reach the stock pegs and has great balance so we are planning some short rides of 50 to 100 miles.



What ever you do, don't strap her to you or the bike. It is far to dangerous. If she can't reach and you can get pegs made or make them yourself then please don't let her ride yet.

So, what happens if you do manage to find someone ignorant enough to provide you with a device to attach the passenger to the driver, and the driver falls off the bike at 45 MPH? Do you land on the kid and smash her, or just drag her down the road with you for a few hundred feet?



Or, like Dr Stupid up there says, put the kid on the seat in front of you, and then when the car makes a left turn in front of you, you can smash the kid in between the car and your body, as you fly over the handlebars and the hood of the car to land in the street on the other side.



Don't do it until you can do it safely! My kids learned to ride a bicycle first, then started on mini-bikes and then small motorcycles. They didn't ride with me until they were tall enough to sit properly on the passenger seat with their feet on the pegs and they knew how to protect themselves in a fall.

Don't listen to these chastizers. Put your girl in front of you, not the back. That way she won't fall off the back. Your legs will help keep her from falling off to the side. She can just let her legs hang. She can grab on to the tank, your jacket, or your belt.



She will really like riding in front too because she will be able too see forward and feel like she is driving.



I take my 5 year old all over the place like this. It's very safe.



I would not advise strapping her to the bike or yourself. In the event of a crash, it is better for her body to not be connected to anything, including yourself. You may crush her if she is connected. It is better for her to be able to roll with the crash. She will more likely survive over you due to her low mass.

Better yet, strap a Volvo to the side of your bike and let your daughter ride in there.

I've seen saftey harness advertised in mc mags that is strapped to the driver , has handles on the back to hang onto, + the belt goes around both the driver and passenger.

But----it sure aint recommended by the traffic saftey committee....

The best thing you can do if you really believe "safety comes first" (I would think that comment would be more appropriate back before she turned 5.) ...if you HAVE to take them with you, is buy your child a HELMET...and not just because it's cheap & they'll 'grow out of it'...but a good one that won't allow his poor little head to crack like an egg when it hits the pavement when you "lay it down',,,the other thing you can do is teach your child to "GEAR UP".



So, we've ascertained your daughter has a helmet...ok---now, take a look at her pretty soft and pink skin on her little legs and arms.



There are only TWO different kinds of motorcylce riders,,,1. Those who've 'gone down'...and 2. Those who WILL 'go down'.

If your daughter hasn't gone down, then---sorry to say it but she will...either low-siding or by (God-Forbide: high-siding. Ok, now>>>

I'm not a "Gear Nazi"...but before anyone gets on a motorcycle they should be fully outfitted with helmet, leathers (from neck to ankle) BOOTS (how much is a foot worth?), GAUNLET gloves (how much are your wrists worth)...& NO CHAPS (how much are the family jewels worth?)... I see people with kids on their backs sitting on a jump seat...and I usually say outloud (under my breath) ... STUPID

HOW MUCH DO YOU CARE FOR YOUR KID?

If your answer is there's no limit...then keep him (or her) OFF of your motorcycle.

I saw a man RIDING a kid's motorcycle the other day, WITH the kid in FRONT of him & his own knees were up high around the kids' ears (like he was protecting him---yeah RIGHT!---WRONG!)...& NEITHER ONE of them had any gear on....as a matter of fact BOTH their legs and arms were BARE..

Have you ever seen what "Road Rash" looks like on bare skin?...pretty NASTY.



I changed the BURN dressings for 5 WEEKS on my brother who suffered it on the top of his BUM only because it was a hot day and he didn't want to zip the jacket (yes leather) to the pants at the back waist; well,,,when he went down, he skidded on the pavement (freeway) for 75 feet on his back...and the brass zipper did the rest...eeeeeuuuu.

anyway, this dude was teaching his kid how to ride I guess...but he wasn't teaching him any responsibility to himself...

How do you think you'll feel when she goes down...if she has nothing (no leathers) to protect her skin?



I've also know a girl whose family is SUING her b/f's family, bcz she (19 years old) was riding on the jump seat of his motorcycle, and they went down and when the medics got to her...her fingernails were all gone! from digging them in to the pavement! euuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu ... that's not all she suffered but that was the most unusual thing.

STUPID!!



Him? he didn't make it. No gear...

Ok dude really she should be able t reach the pegs wouldn't want her feet in the rear wheel ! but in the UK you can by a belt that you wear and has handles on it that the passenger holds ! only other thing i can thing of is belt her to your belt ! hope this helps

It is illegal in most to carry a passenger that can't reach the footpegs.You can check with the DMV or look up the laws @ the library.

It is so nice you want share this with your daughter just take care make sure she is in frount of you as your arms and legs will stop her falling off and only go a short way as it looks fun but she might get cold and fidget
