Do most people completely switch out the exhaust systems on harleys or do they just buy slip on mufflers to change the sounds?

It's probably about half and half.

If one is upgrading the motor at the same time, it makes sense to do the whole exhaust system and tune the bike once for all of the work rather than piecing it all together and having to constantly play with tuning the bike.

If you burned your wad buying the bike and the lifestyle clothing so you look the part, then slip ons may be all that your budget can afford.

Depends on if they ride to ride or if they ride to show.

Ride to show? Probably slip ons so they can roar at the bar parking lot.

Ride to ride? Probably have significant money wrapped up in their machine and they most likely also installed a power commander to map the engine ECU properly.

I honestly find that hilarious. Whenever I see someone with a crazy exhaust set up, I walk up and say, "Man, those are some nice pipes! What map do you have the commander at?" The most common response is a wide eyed stare. Then I laugh and walk away. Basically the clown has no idea what he is doing, and is riding an oversized noise maker for show. Occasionally I will find someone who starts in on the exhaust mapping they tweaked with their power commander, but it seems rare.

So my guess? Among loud bikes, Harley included, I would say only about 30-40% of them have a clue on how their exhaust works or did it correctly. Another great way to find out? Follow them around a bit and when they slow down with engine braking, you start hearing the back fires, lol.

Depends, if you want to do it on the cheap - slip on silencers / mufflers. After market silencers will do the job of changing the bikes tone / loudness.

IF you want better quality pipes (Stainless steel for example), and perhaps a slight increase in performance (As well as the different tone and loudness) - full exhaust system.

Harley-Davidson Inc[4] (NYSE: HOG, formerly HDI[5]), often abbreviated H-D or Harley, is an American motorcycle manufacturer. Founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, during the first decade of the 20th century, it was one of two major American motorcycle manufacturers (Indian being the other) to survive the Great Depression.[6] Harley-Davidson also survived a period of poor quality control and competition from Japanese manufacturers.[7]

From 1977 to 2014, the only motorcycles sold to the public under the Harley-Davidson brand have been heavyweight motorcycles, with engine displacements greater than 700 cc, designed for cruising on highways. Harley-Davidson motorcycles, or "Harleys", are noted for the tradition of heavy customization that gave rise to the chopper style of motorcycle.[8] Except for the modern VRSC and Street model families, current Harley-Davidson motorcycles reflect the styles of classic Harley designs. While Harley-Davidson's attempts to establish itself in the light motorcycle market have met little success, and have largely been abandoned since the 1978 sale of its Italian Aermacchi subsidiary, the company re-entered the middleweight market in 2014 with its Street series of motorcycles.

Harley-Davidson sustains a large brand community which keeps active through clubs, events, and a museum. Licensing of the Harley-Davidson brand and logo accounted for $40 million (0.8%) of the company's net revenue in 2010.

Note the correct way to write the proper name of this company which is made of the two names of the founders, both proper names that must be capitalized AND hyphenated. Is your name Paul Smith or Paul smith? If you are interested in the details as to these motorcycle, use the voice feature of your device and contact a retailer. Ask your question. Learning to do research rather that asking "mom" for information is a huge sign of maturity. Since I must assume you are a kid since the serious grammar errors give that indication, the exhaust sound of Harley-Davidson motorcycles is actually patented. NO one can copy or imitate that sound or they have a legal battle. Of course, I am referring to other manufacturers. Same with the Ferrari sound.

Both. Depends on the sound you want, look you want, and budget.

Probably half and half, but as long as it's louder they don't care. Just gotta cover up the rattles and shakes.
