The models I'm most interested in are the RSV Mille R and the Falco. I'm thinking the Falco is more in my budget, but I like them both a lot. I'm mostly concerned with mechanical reliability and electrical reliability.

Great handling, good looks, slightly under-powered, poor parts availability, and last but not least decent reliability.
The Japs have the sport bike market so dominated that it just doesn't make good economical sense to buy anything other than Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki or Yamaha unless you just want to be riding an inferior bike just to look cool. Hardly worth it I think. Just go ahead and get you a Hayabusa, customize it so you don't look exactly like everyone else riding a rice-rocket and enjoy! In the long haul, you won't regret it.

Aprilia! Let me put it to you this way. I am 60 years old and have been riding since I am 17. About three years ago I developed a bad case of osteoarthritis in my right knee. I could no longer bring my knee over my Harley. I figured my riding days were over. I sold the hog and got depressed. One day someone told me to go to a particular store and look at the Aprilia Atlantic 500. I did and was a bit taken back because it is a maxi-scooter. But, I figured out what the hell and gave it a try. It weighs about 500 pounds, has some pretty decent get up and go. If fun to ride and great for my knee. So, I bought it. I now have it a little over three years and never had a moments trouble with it. It is reliable and dependable. I don;t think you could go wrong with buying an Aprilia product.

My neighbor has a Ducati (same parent company). All in all, he has not had many problems. I agree with the other person about the parts situation. He waited 2 weeks once for some exhaust hardware. I think as long as you have a strong dealer reasonably close to you or you have a good supply on the internet you'll be fine.
They are smaller production runs than Jap bikes so you'll find that they have "character". If you don't mind doing some wrenching on your own - price to pay for the look/uniqe styling - it's a great bike.
I love the lion in the paint scheme.

the rsv has hydraulic clutch problems meaning bleeding them frequently. waiting for replacement parts can be grief too.
