I am thinking about purchasing a 150cc motor scooter, but only if I can drive it on highways. Does anyone know what the requirements are?

Interstate highways have a posted (usually) minimum speed of 45 mph, but, if you've ever been behind such a "speed demon", then you know it's not really a safe speed.

Back roads and hiughways usually don't have minimum speeds posted or required.

A 150 cc bike can generally do better than that but a lot depends on the combined passenger / cargo / motorcycle load. And don't forget, it's hard on a smaller machine to run 65-75 for long if that is its top speed

As always, check with your state's DMV or DOT for exact information.

Oklahoma Turnpikes Have a Minimum Of 250cc for OK. highways there is a limit for riders age 14 of 125 cc. depending on your weight you may want to consider a larger cc scooter or a actual bike from what i have seen with scooters their acceleration is slow compared to a bike, that could be a problem depending on where you plan on riding. Interstates have a minimum speed limit although I would think it to be certain death to ride 45mph on a small machine while traffic is running 70 to 75. You can do what to you want I have Only been riding 35 years and only seen a few hundred poeple die. Personally I would ride a small scooter such as a 150 on city streets and not very busy ones at that you will find they are under powered for the conditions especially the one made in China !

"Oklahoma has minimum speed limits posted on more or less all interstate highways that are 25 mph below the maximum speed limit. For example, on the turnpikes, which have a maximum speed limit of 75 mph, they are nearly always accompanied by a sign stating a minimum speed limit of 50 mph."

"(a) No person shall drive a motor vehicle at such a slow speed as to impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with law.

(b) Whenever the State Highway Commission or local authorities within their respective jurisdictions determine on the basis of an engineering and traffic investigation that slow speeds on any part of a highway consistently impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic, the Commission or such local authority may determine and declare a minimum speed limit below which no person shall drive a vehicle except when necessary for safe operation or in compliance with law."

Most 150cc scooters have a TOP speed of around 55 mph on level ground (slower on hills) . . a nice CRUISING speed is around 45-50 mph. Although technically legal, a 150cc scooter is realistically only suitable for very short duration interstate travel . . a 250cc or 400cc would be preferable.

150 cc in many state is a 'motor-driven cycle' and not allowed on expressways. Others use a 15 hp standard. Check DOT . I Illinois years back my 150 Honda had actual displacement of 154 cc, the Suzuki and Yamaha's had 147 and 149 cc engines- I got a motorcycle plate and was allowed on expressways, the others got small plate and weren't legal on main roads- but they had a couple extra hp - over 15-and were legal in Ohio.

250 cc or smaller for all 14 and up drivers.
