what trouble should i look for in buying a 1982 yamaha maxim 400 motorcycle?

Visuals...look to see if it has been kept up....make sure you aint seeing oil smoke...tail pipe should show a nice tan color. Audibles....the motor should sound tight...no rattles, no noise from the timing chain...no unusual noise. keep this in mind...its old as dirt so dont pay more than 300 bucks for it no matter what! Check the tires for weather cracks...Tires are more important on a bike than a car! Your life depends on them!
