My boy had two of them, one when he was 7, and got a bigger one when he was 8. I highly recommend getting an older name brand dirt bike. Both Chinese bikes where indeed poorly made, and unsafe, defiantly not for jumping. They did run extremely well but that's all I can say good about them. All the cheap parts broke often(ended up putting Honda parts on so they wouldn't brake anymore). You must check the axle nuts every time before your kids ride. I finally got sick of worrying if my boy was going to get hurt if something major were to brake, and got really sick of putting parts on them$$$$$$$$$. These bikes were bought brand new, still in the crate. We decided to buy an 81 XR100 Honda in mint(like new) condition, for the same price of one of the brand new Chinese bikes, and never had a problem with anything falling apart, or bending. Never had any problems with it what so ever. If you think you can't afford a brand name bike, I would be saving your money until you can, you will eventually end up spending more money trying to fix the cheapy bike, and the resale value sucks. Keep your eyes open for well cared for older bikes, they will bring much more enjoyment, and way less stress.

Keep your son off of these bikes! No bike is better than this crap.

You'll more than likely be disappointed...in general, they are poorly made crap. Search on google for unsatisfied people that bought one of those chinese imports. Then search for unsatisfied people that bought a Honda or something. No contest.
Pay more. Buy the Honda. It will outlast your 5yr old boy. When he outgrows it, sell it for more than you would have paid for Chinese junk.

if u buy the chinease bike u deserve to go to jail now fro killing ur son go second hand cr 50 xr80 rm 50 etc i suggest that you buy a two stroke as they are eisier to rebuild when buying look to see how much white smoke it blows when running it should blow a bit being a two stroke but note heaps also take a socet set with sizes about 6 through to 12 mm sockets and metrick equivelents as you will be able to remove two bolts on the exuats were it mounts to the engine pull the exuats out of the way and you can see directly in to the cilinder and look at the piston sorry if i sound like im treeting u like an idiot but u need to look for any magor scratches marks dents or discloration on the piston and sorounding chamber by moveing the kick or pull start the piston wil move up and down

I had a chinese import. I was very pleased with it. The price/fun ratio makes them extremely worth the money. What people don't realize is that when Japanese bikes first came stateside, they had the same reputation as Chinese bikes have now. Even though it might be SLIGHTLY lower in quality, parts are cheaper and the mechanics of them are almost always copied from an equivalent Jap bike. I say go for it!

Chinese bikes vary wildly in quality. many are crap. Some are pretty decent, and getting better all the time. CF and Lifan are a couple of the more reliable brands.
There are some reliable dealers, and many who will be happy to take your money for the crap.
http://www.gomotomn.com/ is a decent dealer that sells a couple of Chinese lines. I realize that you are in the UK, and they are in Minnesota, but an email inquiry might get you some good advice.

You get what you pay for.
If you want to save money, you're probably going to be getting
something that isn't as safe or reliable.
You shouldn't be looking to be cheap if its going to be for YOUR LITTLE CHILD. If you can't afford a nice, safe gift for him, you shouldn't be buying anything for him.

You really shouldn't buy them; they're not worth your money. Different story if it was only assembled in China by the non-Chinese company's money.

In less than a year you will have to throw it in the garbage when it breaks (and it will).
Parts are impossible to get and dealers don't work on them for that very reason.
Do not buy any bike through the internet.
You are buying from a warehouse with no parts or service department.
Once the limited warranty runs out, you will have no way to repair it.
Buy a used Japanese bike.
The cost will be low and the bike will last a lifetime with proper maintenance and inexpensive engine repairs.
