Yamaha uses a different coding system than what Zack posted.

The VIN is on the frame.

The number on the engine is not the VIN

Can you tell if it is pre 1981? If so, you may have trouble using the VIN to find the year it was made. Since 1981 manufacturers have had a mandatory, uniform 17 digit VIN format that they must follow (if your bike was obviously made after 81, you seem to have misplaced some digits). Now-a-days the 10th digit of the VIN signifies the model year.

A = 80

B = 81

C = 82

D = 83

E = 84

F = 85

G = 86

H = 87

J = 88

K = 89

L = 90

M = 91

N = 92

P = 93

R = 94

S = 95

T = 96

V = 97

W = 98

X = 99

Y= 2000

1 = 2001

2 = 2002

3 = 2003

4 = 2004

5 = 2005

6 = 2006

7 = 2007

8 = 2008

9 = 2009

A = 2010

B = 2011

C = 2012

D = 2013

Hope this helps.
