Because of the amount of people who buy and own Harleys that they seldom ride. The most common mileages seen are 5-10,000 on a 3-5 yr old bike. that really doesn't tell you what high mileage is, though. I would consider 60 to 70,000 miles to be high mileage on any harley under 6 years old. That doesn't mean the bike is not in good shape, only that it has been ridden. If maintenance is kept up, a harley engine can easily reach 100,000 miles. Thats true of all modern motorcycles, as long as they are properly maintained and ridden. If you "ride it like hell" then the wear and tear accumulates quicker than if you ride normally.

It depends on why you are asking. "High" miles on an '04 would probably be anything over about 20,000. That doesn't really mean anything as far as how many miles are left on the bike though. It matters A LOT when you want to sell it though. My GSX-R1000 is for sale right now. It's well maintained and in decent shape. It was ridden by an adult and all the maintenance was done correctly and on time. It still has 32,000 miles on it though, and nobody wants to buy it. They would rather have a lower mileage bike that was abused by a 20 year-old squid than one with 3x the miles that was actually cared for.
So....
High miles for longevity? It really depends on how well it was cared for. Some 50,000 mile bikes have 100,000 miles left in them.
Some 5,000 mile bikes are nearing the end of their service life.
High miles for resale value? In my opinion, you should be getting a substantial discount on a 5 year old bike if it has accumulated more than about 4,000 miles +/- per year, because you will have to take the same hit when you want to eventually sell it.

In the road-sized bikes, (say 650 CC and up) anything that has been reasonably taken care of and ridden normally are easily good for 50,000 miles.
If you look in owner/rider sites, you frequently find people that have ridden their motorcycles over 100,000 miles.
If you try to keep under 25,000 miles, you will find a LOT of bikes available and you will be able to ride them for years.

I've had an Italian and a Japanese bikes with c.65,000 miles. Look for history, a grubby workshop manual and an enthusiastic owner. More difficult from a dealer though.

It depends on the brand of the bike - a BMW should last a lot longer than say a small capacity 2 stroke. It also depends on the stage of tune, if it is a high horsepower and small capacity (for example a 250 cc Suzuki with 60 HP) you would not expect it to last as long as a a large capacity with small horsepower (for example an 800cc BMW with 50 HP).

Depends on how well the motorcycle was maintained. I had a 2005 Road King with 65,000 miles on it and it still ran like the day I bought it.

Unless you get lucky you probably won't find one under 10k miles. I would think anything below about 25k for a 2004 is a good deal. Anything above that you may start running into problems. Unless of course you're looking to do some rebuilding.
