New to motorcycles and need to adjust the chain tension on the bike. Need a step by step instruction and any advice from the more experienced. Thanks to all who reply!

as stated before the manual will be your best friend here, but here is what you have to do. And if you have the "tools" that came with the bike you will be fine.

1) turn motorcycle off and on centerstand or stand of some sort bringing the rear tire off the ground.

2) remove the pin going through the rear axle bolt with pliers, most likely will need to buy another pin.

3) Put wrench on left side axle nut (the shifter) side of the bike.

4) Loosen the Right side of the axle nut.

5) Jar tire to loosen it a little

6) Then take an appropriate sized wrench and the 2 bolts at the end of the swingarms on both sides, turn them clockwise to tighten the chain and make sure the arrow is equal on both sides. There are little hash marks to make this easier

7) Then just do the reverse and lube chain up.

good luck

turn off motorcycle

place motorcycle on centre stand or rear race stand if no centerstand is available.

clean rear wheel, swingarm, and general area.

leave garage.

Go purchase factory owners manual or clymers manual for bike. (avaialble at most shops or ebay) Read instructions thoroughly.

think about what you read. re-read it.

Then, with manual in shop, follow step by step procedure.

Seriously, a manual will be your best resource and guide you better than anyone can remotely.

Plus? you will learn what you need to do for other maintenance items, specifically for your bike

This was beyond my capabilities and equipment, so I always had it done professionally. It didn't need adjustment very often, about every two years.

From what I could tell, all they did was wipe off the chain, then move the rear wheel back a couple of notches.
