Question:
Why do people drive motorcycles without mufflers?

And don't tell me don't tell me "loud pipes saves lives" I live in a state where helmets are optional and these same people that tell me its saver to have a loud bike do not wear a helmet and wear Sleeveless
shirts, cut off jeans and flip flops. Oh that's safe. I wouldn't ride my bike one block without a helmet and leather apparel. Is that the same reason at every light and stop sign you feel the need to rev the piss out of your motorcycle, Only reason that comes to mind is they are attention whores who make us respectable riders look bad. Want attention? paint your body in florescent orange paint slip on a speed o and jog down the street. You will get the attention you crave and you won't wake any sleeping baby's.

I wish to go on road like a gentle breeze... My honda just sounds like hooon daaaa... Smooth like a jet plane! If i want to save my life I would rather use my double horn i installed and rear view mirrors. After all we are not in stone age riding 2 stroke mopeds with obnoxious noise

Lots of reason to ride on road with straight pipes, no mufflers-- most of the reasons come down to the riders ego, choice. For many of the 1% riders that have the quiet mufflers- they don't want the attention of police that loud pipes can attract. The 'Image' riders figure they can afford the tickets and attention- and they sometimes get the attention and find they can't afford the tickets. The Racers go with the performance of open exhaust but often will keep the revving at lights down to avoid angry motorists next to them shooting at tailpipes with pistols legally(sometimes illegally) carried. Public noise making when discretion advised when transporting things can be costly- have lawyer card and bondsman on call when doing things really silly and federally illegal perhaps- the noisy chopper can be used as bear bait while the Goldwings drive by with the $$$$ cargo, it happens more than some people may think.. ..

They're called baffles. And loud pipes do get the attention of car drivers. Plus riding on a sunny day down a two lane winding road sucks with a helmet on. No self respecting biker would ride with shorts and flip flops.

1. There's a perception that the louder the bike, the more powerful it is.

2. I do agree to some extent that "loud pipes save lives". The greatest danger motorcyclists face is not skidding and falling, but rather, being knocked over/ side-swiped by four-wheelers.

It is a sad reality that many drivers have their eyes everywhere but the road. Texting, watching videos etc. You can wear flashing neon lights for that matter and they still might not notice you. Having loud pipes thus make such drivers more aware of your presence, which is obviously better for your safety.

Btw, I don't use loud pipes, because they give me very bad ear aches.

Jason has it right. They make them loud because they want them loud and they don't care what you think about it or that they may be encouraging non-riders to make laws that will eventually get motorcycles banned.

Like it or not, motorcyclists are a minority in the US and most people here just don't understand or care to understand about riding. They think it is dangerous and costs THEM money (you know, all off those brain dead motorcycle accident victims littering our hospitals and not paying their medical bills). Loud bikes are an easy way to pick off our riding rights one by one. Never mind all of those loud cars and trucks..........

So to all the people that say they don't care how loud their bikes are because its YOU that matters. You don't mind if your neighbor starts using a chainsaw say a Sunday morning about 5 am outside your bedroom window it's all good because he likes loud chainsaws........

some people are more into the image part of riding .. personally im fine with a stock quiet exhaust and ride because i enjoy riding, not attracting attention, in fact i prefer back roads and seeing nobody ...

Because they like it bro, do they rant about you wearing gear. In my opinion loud exhaust sounds better than a quiet one it's safer because people can hear you coming and last but not least we are not trying to impress anyone with loud exhaust we do sh!t because we like it we are not out trying to annoy you but If that's the case we just mind our business we care less if it bothers you

The people's choice. Of course, this is in your state.

You need to stop ranting in here and really do something about the problem... Mention to your local law enforcement that in most locations it takes only 2 months of violation fines to recover the cost of a Db. meter. It's all gravy and donuts after that.

all of my bikes INCLUDING my inline four imports are LOUD. I DONT CARE IF YOU DONT LIKE IT! I dont claim that they make me safer.[they dont!] They are LOUD because I LIKE the way it sounds.

a muffler would add extra weight and reduce aerodynamics
